Badass Things to Do on a Rainy Day in Bangkok
There may well come a time when you wonder how to spend a rainy day in Bangkok. It isn’t, unfortunately, wall to wall sunshine for everyone who visits the Land of Smiles. In fact, if you turn up during the rainy season, well, it’s going to rain. We’re not just talking a little bit of light drizzle either.
This rain is serious. It floods the streets, it hammers on roofs and it generally soaks everything through. In fact, last year in Phuket some motorists had to start removing huge snakes from their car engines when the snakes attempted to get away from the water!
For those of you that came here to drink, stop reading this article and hit up our bartenders RIGHT NOW! If it’s raining, Jagerbombs are 100 THB!
It’s All Fun and Games when it Rains in Bangkok
Bangkok is awash (get it?) with rainy day options but one of our favorite is to get into one of the new board game or game bars. Foosball is a go to winner, especially for a big group. Did someone say tournament? Or, if you don’t really value your friendships, try a few games of Monopoly or Risk, Battleship or Scrabble.
Our two favorite spots for these activities are Game Over Lounge and Battlefield Bangkok. Head to Gameover if you’re more into electronic games, Battlefield for the classic board games. Both of them have excellent food options so you won’t be going hungry either.
GAME OVER LOUNGE: Liberty Plaza 1000/39 Khwaeng Khlong Tan Nuea, Khet Watthana, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10110, Thailand
BATTLEFIELD BANGKOK: 71 Sukhumvit 101/1, Bangkok 10260, Thailand
Dodge the Bangkok Rain, Embrace the Unicorn
This is kitsch beyond kitsch. Imagine a perfectly good café that has been thrown up on by every single piece of unicorn merchandise that you can visualize. This is the sort of place that would make Rainbow Dash doubt their commitment to being a unicorn. Escape the rain, reality and any sense of doom and gloom. Unicorns not your thing? Well, maybe every other type of stuffed animal is? Head over to Little Zoo Café in that case.
THE UNICORN CAFE: Soi Sathorn 8, Bangkok, Thailand
LITTLE ZOO CAFE: Bond St, Ban Mai, Pak Kret District, Nonthaburi 11120, Thailand
Picking Up a Light Read
Spending hours in a bookshop is the perfect way to while away the deluges and downpours. Especially if they’re the type of bookshops who don’t kick you out for taking your time and leafing your way through their supply. Candide Books comes highly recommended, not only for its nice riverside location but also for the attached café. For the serious enthusiast, head over to Dasa Books. There’s an equally, if not greater, selection here with an excellent cup of coffee to boot.
CANDIDE BOOKS & CAFE: 207 Tanow Road Bawornniwet Subdistrict Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok, Thailand
DASA BOOKS: 714/4 Sukhumvit Rd, Khwaeng Khlong Tan, Khet Khlong Toei, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10110
Shop until it Stops Dropping
Bangkok has a huge shopping scene. Sure, the outside night markets might not be great during the rain, but the huge mega malls sure are. We’re talking floor upon floor of everything from designer merchandise to the latest tech, from novelty items to gifts fit for a king. We’ve spent our fair share of time in these places. Terminal 21 is your best bet if you don’t want to venture too far off from Bodega Bangkok, since it’s right by Asoke BTS (walking distance).
If the traditional mall isn’t your thing, maybe head over to Asiatique: The Riverfront which is more of a theme park crossed with a shopping experience. It’s pretty unique and there are some great parts to explore.
Completely Get Away from It All
Obviously, we don’t mean leaving Thailand. We’re not savages. We mean mentally get away from it all. Pamper yourself in a spa day. Yunomori is excellently located and is one of the most peaceful places in the city. You’ll be able to enjoy traditional Thai massage coupled with refreshing Japanese baths. Once you’re done, there’s a superb Japanese restaurant right outside.
YUNOMORI ONSEN & SPA: 120/5 Sukhumvit 26 Alley, Khwaeng Khlong Tan, Khet Khlong Toei, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10110, Thailand
The Best Way to Spend a Rainy Day in Bangkok? Who are we kidding?
We already know what you want to do. And what you want to do is come and drink with us. How does this activity vary from one weather condition to the next? Well it doesn’t, except in one very special way. Here at Bodega, when it rains, we pour. We pour 100 THB Jagerbombs to be precise. If that doesn’t lift your spirits then nothing will!
