Art Galleries in Phuket: It’s Not All About Bangla Road!

art galleries in Phuket

You can’t miss these amazing art galleries in Phuket!

There’s been an explosion of interest in art in Thailand in recent years, and this crop of great art galleries in Phuket is a welcome result. Whether you’re into traditional painting, unusual handicrafts or modernist abstracts there’s something for everyone, so here’s our rundown of the best.

Believe it or not, Thailand has an amazing art scene with galleries in Koh Samui and its other tropical islands!

The Best Art Galleries in Patong

Phuket Town is the undisputed hub of the arts scene in Phuket. There are a bunch of traditional galleries here, as well as some cafes that display a rotating selection of art for you to enjoy while you’re sipping your cappuccino which is pretty cool. Elsewhere there are a collection of galleries in the north around Bangtao and Surin if you’re willing to travel slightly further afield. The resorts of Kata and Karon are home to places like the Chao Phraya River Club Art Gallery which is both a lovely arts venue and a great place for a beachside beer.

In Gallery Paintings, Khao Lak

In Gallery is a traditional arts studio which produces paintings in numerous different styles, all produced using long-lasting and vibrant Winton oil paints. Some of their ‘house’ artists have unusual techniques so you’ll find modern, abstract, traditional and portraiture styles all next to each other for viewing. Everything is for sale and you can often meet the artists to talk about their work before you buy it.

Phuket Modern Art

Conveniently located in the middle of Patong, Phuket Modern Art is less a gallery and more an immersive experience. The first thing you’ll notice is that you’re viewing paintings in the middle of a luxury apartment complex. That’s because local artist Suthirak started by placing his paintings in the lobby but people loved them so much that he’s basically now taken over the whole building! His work is colorful, vibrant, sometimes risqué but always striking. All paintings are for sale and prices are negotiable.

Patong Inn Art

Our last pick is a bit unusual in that as well as displaying art for you to enjoy and buy, you can also commission your own pieces from photos, drawings or even your own face! Patong Inn will use oil, acrylic, charcoal or pencil to recreate any image or scene that you can think of and the quality is usually very good. If you want to be a superhero then now’s your chance- they’re particularly good at turning normal people into Avengers characters…

Pab Khean Thai Art Gallery and Frame

In the heart of Phuket Town, Pab Khean is one part art gallery, one part painting school. The art on display is all the work of the eponymous Pab Khean so if you’re a fan then this is worth the trip over from the beaches. Where this gallery differs from others in the area, however, is that art and painting classes are available on request. You can choose from having a taster session or asking for a more in-depth longer course and there’s no better way to gain an appreciation for modern Thai art than having a go at it yourself!

Address: 3 Thepkasattri Road, Talad Yai, Amphoe Muang, 83000

Hours of Operation: 10am – 6pm Monday – Friday, 10am – 12pm Saturday & Sunday

The Art Scene of Phuket

Although there are some famous artists on display round Phuket, quality isn’t all about big names round here. There are so many excellent local artists in the area that you’ll be spoilt for choice. Spend a bit of time exploring what these galleries have to offer and you won’t be disappointed.
