Bring Your Tastebuds to Life: Dining in the Dark in Bangkok
Dining in the Dark is an Eye-Opening Experience
Dining in the Dark is a unique experience that will change your perception of disability, and your understanding of your sense of taste, forever!
In the basement of the 5* Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit is a very unusual restaurant. You don’t go there for the décor, and you’ll never know what crockery they use. You eat some utterly delicious food but can’t say a word about the presentation. What makes this place so different from everywhere else in the city? At this restaurant all the staff are blind, and you dine completely in the dark!
This innovative restaurant is based on an idea born in Switzerland and is now thriving in Bangkok. The benefits are twofold. Firstly you have to rely on your tastebuds to learn all about the food you’re eating, as the meal is served in a pitch black room. Secondly it provides employment to disabled people living locally, and supports them in their career development. This is an amazing culinary experience which is giving something back to the local community. What’s not to like!
When you arrive at the Sheraton hotel, you’ll be taken to the BarSu cocktail lounge for a briefing with your waiter or waitress. They’ll explain what’s about to happen, and take any light-emitting devices from you for safe-keeping. Wave goodbye to your phone and your watch, the next 90 minutes are all about the food!
At this point you can choose between four menus: Thai, Western, Vegetarian or Surprise. Obviously you should go for the ‘Surprise’ option as it makes guessing the ingredients much more fun! Once you’re happy with your meal choice then get ready to head down into the restaurant itself.
Dive in for the Meal
It’s not just dark in the main room, it’s pitch black. Line your friends up behind you, put your hands on the shoulders of your waiter or waitress in front and follow them through thick heavy curtains into the restaurant beyond. Don’t bother waiting for your eyes to adjust to the darkness because they won’t!
You’ll be given a bit of time to familiarize yourself with the table so feel for your cutlery, plate and glass and make a mental note to try not to knock anything over…
The Food is to Die For
Don’t be fooled into thinking that this is a gimmicky restaurant where the food is in second place. Nothing could be further than the truth! No matter which menu you choose, the dishes are amazing and people regularly return for the quality of the food rather than the novelty of the darkness. You won’t be told at the table what you’re eating so it’s time to challenge yourself. The shock of realizing how much of our taste relies on what we can see is a real eye-opener. Pun intended!
Did you guess right?
After your 90 minutes of fine dining are up then it’s back into BarSu to find out what you ate. Your server will have an iPad with pictures of your dishes so you can enjoy their beauty in retrospect! If you’re anything like us then you may have a few embarrassing mis-identifications to own up to…
The food at Dining in the Dark is worth the price tag on its own, but when you add in the fun of eating in the pitch black and the great work that the restaurant does with the local disabled community and this really is a must-visit. Dinner costs around 1700 baht ($50) per person including taxes and places are limited so book ahead. It will be a stand-out experience of your time in Bangkok.
